Mike
McMeekin is well know for his museum quality
collection of prehistoric shark teeth and fossils (all
recovered while diving South Carolina's snake and alligator
infested rivers). Most people associate Vito Bertucci
with
fossil diving and huge prehistoric shark teeth. Few know
that Mike and Vito were good friends and it was actually
Mike that introduced Vito to Fossil diving in the rivers of
South Carolina and Florida.
Listed below are an assortment of fossils, early man spear
points and other artifacts assembled into an identification
guide for river divers.
Note: Mike is also an avid treasure hunter. Check out his
Metal Detecting Treasure Showcase.

identified by shape as well as presence of serrations. |

Spear Points and Arrow Heads |
|

|
Recovered
while fossil diving in South Carolina by Dan Berg. As Mike McMeekin
explains "we are not talking about cowboys and Indians" these spear
points and arrow heads are from early man. Most Indian artifacts can
be found while diving around high ground areas of the rivers. Photo

of the early river explorers. He started diving the Cooper and other
rivers in the mid 1970's. His artifact collection is to say the
least impressive! |

Dating
between 11,300 and 10,900 years ago, Clovis points are the earliest
spear points from North America. Originally named after the town in
New Mexico where this type of spear point was first identified, they
have now been recorded across much of North America. This point was
recovered
while fossil diving in South Carolina by Mike McMeekin. |
