AMSTERDAM
The 211 foot steel hulled British freighter Amsterdam was built in
1866. In 1867 only one year after being launched, the Amsterdam was
en-route from Spain to New York. On October 21, 1867 she encountered
a dense fog and ran aground only a few miles from Montauk Point. The
wreck now sits only 100 yards off shore and her engine still breaks
the surface at low tide.
