FIRE ISLANDER
On May 8, 1991 the 65foot wood hulled ferry FIRE ISLANDER was sunk
as a artificial reef at the Jones Beach reef site. The FIRE ISLANDER
was owned by Fire Island Ferries, Inc and was used in the Great
South Bay. The vessel was donated to be sunk as a reef. Her
superstructure and all possible flotation debris and pollutants were
removed. The Ferries hull was also filled with concrete for ballast.
The ferry now sits in 67 feet of water. I have not had a chance to
dive her yet but she should prove to be a nice addition to Wreck
Valley.
