LEMUEL BURROWS
The steel hulled American coiler Lemuel Burrows was built in 1917.
She was 438 feet long had a63 foot beam and was originally named the
Deepwater.
On March 14, 1942 the Lemuel Burrows was torpedoed by the U-404.
Three torpedoes hit the doomed ship sending her and twenty of her
crew to the bottom. The wreck was latter wire dragged so as not to
be a hazard to navigation.
Today the twisted remains of the Lemuel Burrows, also known as the
Coiler Wreck, can be found in80 feet of water off Absecon inlet
NJ 26928.2 42991.1
