MARYLAND
The barge Maryland was built in 1891 and originally named the
General Slocum. She was originally a paddle wheel steam ship. The
Slocum was 236 feet long had a 38 foot beam and displaced 1,284
gross tons. As a paddle wheeler she was involved in one of the worst
maritime disasters of her day. On June 15, 1904 while cruising the
Hudson with over 1500 passengers the Slocum caught fire. Her wood
hull was quickly engulfed with flame. The end result was over 1200
passengers lost their lives. A few years latter the charred hull
from the Slocum was purchased and converted into a barge.
On December 4, 1911the barge Maryland was en-route from Camden NJ to
Newark NJ when she started to leak. At the time she was being towed
by the tug Hudson. The Marylands crew tried to repair the barge but
the leak was to severe. The Maryland was sunk off Sea Isle City NJ.
The Hudson was able to rescue the Marylands crew of three. The wreck
sits in 25 feet of water a few hundred yards off the Ludlam beach.
