NORNESS
The Panamanian tanker Norness was built in 1939. She was 489 feet
long and had a 65 foot beam. On January 14, 1942 the Norness was
en-route to New York. She was torpedoed by theU-123 about 60 miles
southeast of Montauk Point. The Norness did not go down immediately.
All of her crew were able to get into life boats before the U-Boat
fired two additional torpedoes that sent the huge ship bow first to
the bottom.
The Norness now sits in 270 feet of water 61 miles out of Montauk
Point.
