OCEAN PRINCE
Floating Dry Dock No.4 was a 200 foot long, 85 foot wide and 35 foot
high wooden barge. She was donated by New York Shipyards to be sunk
as a fish haven off Fire Island. Before the Dry Dock was sunk, a
variance was obtained from the Army Corp's of Engineers. This was
necessary because the Dry Dock had such a high silhouette that she
would stick above the minimum 50 foot clearance necessary for any
material deposited on the reef.
On Saturday November29, 1986, due to the efforts of Chet Zawacki,
Captain Steve Bielenda, and the Captree Boatman's Association, Dry
Dock No. 4 completed her 14 hour tow from Jersey City to a
predetermined location on the southeast corner of the Fire Island
Artificial Reef. Her seacocks were opened at 9:30 AM, and within a
half hour she had slipped beneath the waves.
Dry Dock No. 4,nick-named Ocean Prince by Steve Bielenda after the
tug boat who towed her, is now sitting in 71 feet of water. Her "V"shaped
structure has broken down allowing lobsters, ling and black fish to
inhabit her twisted remains.
