SAN SABA

The freighter San Saba was built in 1879. She was originally named the Colorado. In 1915 after afire gutted the vessel she was rebuilt and renamed San Saba. She was 306 feet long and had a 39 foot beam.

On October 4, 1918the San Saba was en-route from new York to Tampa with a general cargo. The San Saba hit a mine laid by the German U-Boat 117. The San Saba went down within five minutes taking all of her crew to their graves.

Today the San Saba wreck, also known as the Magnolia Wreck" sits in 80 feet of water off Barnegat Inlet NJ. The wreck is broken down and scattered but divers will still recognize her boiler and propeller.
