CONDITIONS:
On December 26, 1913,the 307 foot, schooner barge, Undaunted and
another schooner barge, the A.G. Ropes, were being towed by the tug
Edgar F. Luckenbach. A fierce Christmas gale was blowing and the
captain of the tug decided to cut his tow free. He signaled to
Captain Fickett of the Undaunted and Captain Olson of the A.G. Ropes
to drop anchor and ride out the storm. Shortly after, both barges
were washed into the breakers and pounded into pieces.
Unfortunately, all ten crew members perished in the frigid waters.
The Undaunted now lies scattered just outside the surf off Island
Beach State Park.
