Shipwreck Stone Barge
The
Stone Barge lies three miles southeast of Jones Inlet. She sunk while carrying a cargo of cut granite jetty rocks, supposedly to
be used for the Jones Beach jetty. As the story goes, the tug Edwin Duke that
was towing the barge also went down in the same storm and now rests a short
distance away.
Today,
most of the barge has either been buried or deteriorated although some wood
still remains onthe north east
side. The long pile of stones remaining above sand lies in 55 feet of water and
makes a good habitat for lobsters and fish. Her location, so close to the inlet, makes her a very popular spot
especially on summer weekends.It
isn't uncommon to have five or ten boats anchored over the wreck at any one
time.
