CONDITIONS:
Diving
Caumsett State Park
requires a special permit. The permits are limited
and are given out on a
first-come, first-serve basis from the Parks Department at
Belmont Lake State Park. The
permit is issued per car, so I suggest squeezing
as many divers as you can into one vehicle. This site was first opened
to diving after L.I.D.A. (Long Island Diving Association)
obtained permission from the Parks
Department a few years back.
Caumsett Park
is typical of many north shore dive sites. Divers
will find easy
beach access, a sand bottom, and if they swim east
for about 250 yards, some
scattered rocks.
Depth ranges from about four to 15 feet, and there is a fair
amount of marine life, especially seaweed.
This site happens to be especially good for practicing underwater
navigation. Others simply enjoy this site for an early season
tune-up dive. According to Janice Raber, the park recently put in
steps going from the parking lot
down to the beach. This addition makes it even
easier for beach
divers to access the site.
