DEMOCRAT POINT
DIRECTIONS: (Fire Island, Suffolk
County)
NOTE:
This
location is not accessible by car The only way to
dive this site is
hy boat.
CONDITIONS:

Democrat Point,
located on the east side of Fire Island Inlet,
happens to be not
one, but two fantastic dive sites. Because divers can
only get to these sites by
boat, the number of divers has always been limited.
The first site is
located on the jetty, on the south side of
Democrat Point.
Divers
should be aware
of the currents that sweep through Fire Island Inlet, plus watch
the
weather. I know I would not want to try diving the jetty when the
surf was
up. Once here, divers will find themselves on a clean
sand bottom with the jetty
acting like a fish
haven. Divers will not only find lobsters, black fish, striped bass,
fluke, flounder, crabs and mussels, but a good amount of
monofilament
line, since this is also a popular fishing site. Due
to the current, I would suggest
diving only be
done here at slack tide. Depth ranges from ten to about 20 feet.
The second
location is situated on the north side. Divers will find a small
area sheltered from most tidal currents, with large submerged rocks,
and a hole that
drops to about 40 feet at high tide. This hole has
the nickname,
Bottle Hole,
because it acts
as a catch basin for discarded bottles, which, until caught here,
drift with the current along the inlet's sandy bottom.
For anyone with a
boat, especially if it's located near Fire Island Inlet, I would
definitely recommend diving the north side. I believe that all will
enjoy the
abundant amount and variety of marine life.
