DIRECTIONS:
(Montauk, Suffolk County)
Take Southern
State Parkway to Exit 44 East, Sunrise Highway. Stay on
Sunrise
to Montauk Highway and continue east into the town of Montauk.
Turn
left onto Second House Road and drive north to the
water. Turn right onto Navy Road. Navy
Road will end at a gate. This area is private property and
permission is needed to park here. If you turn left onto Navy
Road, you will end up in a condo development. This is also private
property but I have been told that is
possible to park just before the condo entrance.
CONDITIONS:
Fort Pond Bay
is a good beginner beach dive, and is used quite
often by dive
shops conducting their open water diver training
sessions. Divers can find all types of marine
life along with quite a bit of seaweed. Visibility can be very
good and, as always, high tide is the best time to plan your dive
here.
Back in World War
II Fort Pond Bay
was used as a U.S. Navy Submarine Base. Because of
this military presence, some interesting artifacts have been
recovered in the area. Many divers walk or swim to the long pier
in front of the
condos. On and around the pier, divers have found
everything from bullets to bottles, and I
know of one diver who was lucky enough to recover a rifle.
