HORTON POINT
DIRECTIONS:
(Southold, Suffolk
County)
Take the Long
Island Expressway east to Exit 73, Old Country Road. Drive
east on Old
Country Road; it will change into Main Road. Once into the town of
Southold, turn left onto Youngs Avenue. Drive north on Youngs Avenue
to
the end. Turn right onto North Road, then a quick left on Lighthouse
Road.
Lighthouse Road will bring you into a parking lot that overlooks
Horton Point Beach. The parking lot is posted "No Parking l0 p.m. to
7a.m."
CONDITIONS:

Located on the north
side of the north fork, Norton Point is a truly unique dive site.
Unfortunately, the uniqueness of the Point comes from how difficult
it is for divers to get themselves and their dive gear into the
water. To better explain, the parking lot is on top of a bluff; and
there are 121 grueling steps down an old wooden staircase to get to
the beach. After the dive, this hike becomes even worse when you
have to lug your water-soaked dive gear back up.
For
those who dive the Point, they will find a small pebble and sand
bottom, large rocks with many crevices, an abundant array of marine
life, and, of course, great lobstering!
Once
back in the parking lot, divers might want to visit the Horton Point
Lighthouse Marine Museum. George Washington originally commissioned
the lighthouse back in 1790. The museum, maintained by the Southold
Historical Society, is an enjoyable way to finish off the day.
