MANHATTAN BEACH
REEF DIRECTIONS:
(Brooklyn, Kings
County)

Take the Belt
Parkway to Coney Island Avenue South. Turn left on Neptune Avenue,
then right on West End Avenue. Turn left on Oriental Boulevard, then
right on Dover Street. Take Dover South to the end and park.
CONDITIONS:
Located on Long
Island's south shore,
Manhattan Beach
offers divers living on
the west end a nice local beach
dive. According to Instructor, Bob Lyons, depth
of water here
ranges from twelve feet at low tide to 20 feet at high.
Divers can
navigate to a submerged reef located just offshore by navigating on
a 180-degree course for about 150
yards. Once on the reef, divers can hunt for
lobsters, spear fish, or even
take photographs of the wide variety of local marine life.
This marine life includes starfish, anemones, crabs, fluke,
flounder, black
fish, and even sea urchins.
There is a
running current, so dives should be planned for slack tide. Also,
because of the seasonal boat traffic and fishermen sporting this
site, divers should be well
practiced in underwater navigation. This skill will allow divers
to
visit the reef and return to shore without ever coming to the
surface, therefore eliminating most of
the danger from passing boats. The trusty dive flag also
will play an important role in
safely enjoying the undersea environment located at the
Manhattan Beach Reef.
