MATTITUCK TWIN JETTIES

DIRECTIONS:
(Southold,
Suffolk County)
WEST JETTY: Take
the Long Island Expressway to Exit 73, Old Country
Road. Old Country
will change names to Main Road. Drive east until you pass
under a
train trestle, then drive .8 miles and turn left on Factory Avenue.
Take Factory to the end and turn left. Drive through Middle Road and
make the first
right on Cox Neck Road, then left on Luthers
(Breakwater) Road. Continue all
the way to the end
and park.
EAST JETTY: Take
Old Country Road, which will merge into Main Road.
Turn left onto
Wickham Avenue. Make a left onto Mill Lane, then another left on
East Mill or Oregon, and then right onto Reeve Avenue. Make a left
turn on
Baile Beach Road, and take it to the end. Parking is
available on either side of
the two jetties.
CONDITIONS:
I have always
had good luck at this site. Visibility can be very good, but it can
also be very bad. No matter what the
visibility, I've found more than enough
aquatic life to keep me occupied.
Lobstering, of course, is always high on a
beach diver's
list of dive objectives. I don't think anyone will be disappointed,
but lobsters have been a little scarce here for the past few years.
Overall, I prefer
the
East Jetty.
Spear fishing for
black fish out by the point can
be very rewarding.
As is the case with all inlets, divers should be aware of the
currents
and the heavy boat traffic during summer months.
