OBI BEACH

(Oak Beach, Suffolk County)

Directions:

Take Southern State Pkwy to Robert Moses Pkwy and head south. Stay on Robert Moses over the bridge than head west on Ocean Pkwy. You will have to drive west to the first "U" turn than take Ocean Pkwy. back east towards Captree. Get into far right lane and turn off into Oak Beach. Turn right onto the service road and head west again. You will be traveling parallel to Ocean Pkwy.

Parking lot will be down a bit on your left side.

Please note that the parking lot is posted "For Town Residence Only." Even though parking has not been a problem in the past, it is definitely a park at your own risk area.

CONDITIONS:

This little beach offers easy parking, excellent visibility and a gradual sloping bottom. Many area dive shops actually use the spot for their open water training sessions. Diver, Ed Slater reports that to the right of the parking lot is a patch of eel grass. It's here that divers with a good eye for detail can usually spot sea horses. On the east side of the parking lot, straight out of the small jetty, divers will find the remains of an old wooden barge. The best time to dive here is at High Slack.
