SAG HARBOR JETTIES

DIRECTIONS:                               (Sag Harbor, Suffolk County)

Take Southern State to Sunrise Highway East. Stay on Sunrise, which will turn

into Montauk Highway. Drive east into the town of Water Mill. Make a left turn onto Scuttle Hole Road and drive north to the end. Turn left on Sag Harbor Turnpike. Take the Turnpike, which turns into Main St. to the end. The only close parking is from the Yacht Club property, and permission is needed for access. The only other option is a long walk or by boat. The later is definitely the recommended way to visit these jetties.

CONDITIONS:

Diving the jetties can be quite rewarding. Both jetties are very long and at high tide visibility can be quite good. Divers have found everything from lobsters and blackfish to old bottles. Sag Harbor itself also can be a fascinating dive. The harbor has been used as a safe refuge since colonial times, and divers have recovered a wide assortment of bottles from the area. Remember to watch out for boat traffic and be sure to tow a dive flag.
