Mike
McMeekin recovered these silver coins on Gilgo Beach after a winter
storm. Coin on Left is 1779 1 Reale minted in Mexico. Coin on Right
is 1688 Pc of eight 1 Reale minted in Lima Peru.
Double
heart gold ring and 24 K Gold chain found at Jones Beach by Mike
McMeekin. According to Mike Jones Beach is best worked at low tide
and after a strong North East storm.
Mike
McMeekin recovered these five Black Onyx rings while working an old
hotel site in Patchogue. The rings were found in a relatively small
area over the period of three hours.
This
small cannon ball was recovered while hunting on private property in
Farmingdale, NY.
One
of my favorite artifacts in Mike McMeekin's collection is this lead
musket ball. The ball is flattened. Not by impact with a solid
object but rather from the teeth of a soldier. This poor guy must
have been in some serious pain to byte that hard.
My
friend Mike McMeekin found this coin on a beach in NJ. Coin is in excellent condition especially considering be
submerged in a salt water environment. We had been hunting the beach
after a winter storm. This coin was found high and dry in the sand.
Mike actually spotted it before his metal detector had a chance to
sound off. We think this and other coins recovered in the area came from the
wreck of the
Capt.
Ed Slater recovered this Congress button while metal
detecting a farm field in eastern Long Island.
Capt.
Ed Slater recovered this 1797 coin while diving the
Edlys
brass percussion cap. Recovered on 2/28/09 by Dan Berg while metal
detecting in about 10 feet of water. Ring in upper right was found
on the same day but different location.

Mike
McMeekin is one of Long Island's most distinguished wreck
divers and treasure hunters. Mike is an avid scuba diver and
has combined is love of history and the ocean with a passion
for recovering gold. He is well know for his museum quality
collection of prehistoric shark teeth and fossils (all
recovered while diving South Carolina's snake and alligator
infested rivers). Mike is equally know as a Treasure
Hunter. He metal detects while combing local beaches, parks,
farms and anywhere else that is permissible. Mike was
featured on the front cover of Newsday, within this authors
Wreck Valley and Long Island Shore Divers books, as well as
in many prominent treasure hunting magazines. Last count he
had recovered well over 700 gold rings in his collection and
now weighs his silver by the pound. His knowledge of coins,
buttons and other artifacts is legendary and it is my belief
that he is the best shallow water hunter in the North East,
Along with his friend and fellow treasure hunter Fred
Krupowicz they started and have run Treasures Unlimited
since 1992. The shop is now the number one Whites
Electronics dealerships in the USA. Anyone that wants to
learn the tricks of the trade from a true master can shop by

demonstration. Mike now runs the Nassau shop in Bellmore.

Ever go to the beach and watch a guy strolling down the waters edge metal detector in hand. That guy is not just searching for pocket change. He is looking for and most likely finding treasure. For the purpose of this text we will focus on Beach and Water Hunting. Learn why Metal detecting can be enjoyed as a hobby by those of all ages. Its one of the only activities that can quickly pay for itself while providing the hobbyist with outdoor fun, adventure and exercise. This text defines water and beach detecting into five distinct forms of treasure hunting. Please be aware that many of these types of detecting overlap. For example a beach hunter with a water proof detector will often venture into the shallow surf in search of
gold rings and a scuba diver could certainly use his same detector on the dry beach. This text teaches the basics as well as tricks of the trade learned form years of detecting.
