ATLANTIC
The 1112 ton side wheel steamer Atlantic was built in New York in
1846. She was sunk on November27, 1846. She was en-route from New
London to New York. During her voyage the Atlantic lost power. Her
captain ordered her anchors dropped. Unfortunately, they did not
hold the big steamer against increasing seas. The Atlantic finally
drifted into the rocks by North Hill. Over 40 people lost their
lives in the tragedy. This wreck is now scattered, low lying and
mostly buried. Her remains sit in about 20 feet of water.
