CONTINENT
The freighter Continent was built in Newfoundland in 1931. She was
149 feet long, had a 25foot beam and displaced 466 gross tons.
On January 10, 1942while en route from New York with a cargo of
produce. At 7:15 pm she collided with the Byron D Benson. The
Continent went down with one loss of life. Latter the accident was
blamed on the Continent for not giving the Bryon D. Benson her right
of way.
The Continent now sits in 145 feet of water. Conditions and
visibility on the wreck can be poor. According to dive Dave Keller
this wreck is half buried and filled with mud.
