DEFENSE
The Defense was converted into a warship in 1775. She was fitted
with 16 six pound cannons and 20 swivel guns. On March 12, 1779
while being chased by British ships the Defense ran aground on
Bartlett Reef. All of her cannons and rigging were salvaged from the
ship which was only partly submerged. Many reports list this as a
possible
Treasure Wreck. Possibly because of the gold payroll which
was supposed to be aboard.
