USS G-2
The US submarine G-2was built in Bridgeport, Ct in 1909. The
submarine was launched on January 10,1912 and commissioned on
February 6, 1915. New technology made this submarine obsolete before
it saw any service.
The navy planed to use the G-2 in an experiment to see how effective
its depth charges were to submarines. After several depth charge
explosions the G-2 main hatch was removed. Several men went aboard
not realizing how severely damaged the submarine already was.
Without warning the G-2 dipped beneath the waves and went to the
bottom stern first. One of the four on board managed to fight his
way against the in rushing water and escaped. Three navy men went
down with theG-2. In 1962 the submarine was salvaged.
Today the wreck sits in 65 feet of water in Two Tree Island Channel.
