HIGHLANDS BEACH GOLD WRECK
Back in 1948 a beach comber found the first gold coin while
strolling along Highlands Beach. Another account Potters Treasure
Divers Guide reports that "the first six of these Portuguese gold
coins were picked up by a lobsterman." In either case word soon got
out and the local inhabitants scoured over the beach. They even used
shovels and sifting screens. These efforts produced an additional 28
gold coins. We do not know the origins of these coins but there
could be a treasure wreck
only a short distance from shore.
In 1995 Mike Mc Meekin and I relocated the sight where the coins had
been found. We walked the beach with a metal detector and even used
the machine while scuba diving in the shallow water but found
nothing but modern coins.
