The Silver Ingot Barge Shipwreck  New York and New Jersey's (Wreck Valley)
Historical and current New York and New Jersey Shipwreck Information and images for scuba divers and fisherman.

In  September of 1903 a barge load of silver ingots was being transported to Perth Amboy. The barge contained 7678 100 pound ingots which were being delivered to the American Smelting and Refining Company. The barge rolled over and dumped its valuable cargo into the murky waters of Aurther Kill.

A few days latter Baxter Wrecking Company found the pile of silver scattered across the silty bottom. In five days of salvage 2938 ingots were recovered. Another 10 days of salvage turned up an additional 3000 ingots. In total about 80% of the barges cargo was recovered. According to John Potter's Treasure Diver's Guide "There should be about 1400 100- pound ingots still lost under the mud of Story's Flat".
