The US transport Sumner was built in Hamburg in 1898. She was 351
feet long had a 45 foot beam and displaced 3,458 gross tons. The
Sumner was bound from Colon to New York when she went ashore in a
heavy fog near Barnegate, NJ on December 12, 1916. Attempts were
made to pull the big ship off but they were all in vein. The
Sumner's passengers and crew were all rescued. The Sumner finally
gave way to the constant pounding of the sea and collapsed.
