Blue Lagoon Dive Shop
in Chuuk (Truk Lagoon) opened its doors to divers on November 13,
1973. Since then the humble shack has grown into a modern dive shop
that provides full service to divers looking for adventure on the
historic wrecks of Truk. Gradvin Aisek carries the legacy of his
father, Kimiuo who opened the underwater world of Truk Lagoon to the
world. His experience and knowledge of the wrecks has given divers
an opportunity to enjoy "the World's Greatest Wreck Diving."
Located on the grounds of the Blue Lagoon Dive Resort, formerly
known as the Truk Continental Hotel, the air conditioned dive shop
provides sales, service and classes. A fleet of fast dive boats and
knowledgeable guides provide easy access to the wrecks and allows
divers the freedom to dive in small, personal groups on wrecks of
their choice. This is where you will find some if the best diving in
Micronesia.
The new dive shop and resort, wholly owned and operated by the Aisek
family of Tonoas Island (formerly Dublon), occupy the most prime
property on the southern tip of Weno Island (formerly Moen, in the
village of Neauwo. The coconut-studded spacious grounds include the
island's best beaches and sunset views. The hotel's 54 rooms have
undergone a multi-phase $3.2 million renovation program and the
hotel's dock provides easy departures for trips to the wrecks.
When you experience the mystery and excitement of the Fujikawa Maru
with its beautiful soft coral growth and schools of colorful fish or
descend into the cargo holds of the Sankisan and San Francisco Maru
you will understand why the license plates in Chuuk call it "Divers
Haven." With over 40 wrecks to dive you will want to extend your
trip!

Spectacular remains of nearly 70
coral draped Japanese ships and countless aircraft were condemned to
watery graves by U.S. Naval air attacks during "Operation Hailstone"
late in World War II. Now lying scattered upon the floor of Truk's
huge 40 mile diameter tropic lagoon, they are easily accessible to
all sport divers seeking maximum attractions.
'THORFINN' began diving Micronesia 21years ago, with Truk as a
terminus for outer island cruises. Truk's sheltered lagoon with the
world's finest shipwreck diving led this choice. Warm, relatively
clear, current free waters of this great ocean lake provide
comfortable diving for novice to expert. Captain and dive crew have
long lived the wrecks and documented their configurations in a
published sketch book. Much historic detail and information will be
related at tableside conversations during your visit. |

World War II Wrecks of
Truk Lagoon, suggests at first
glance that it covers only the sunken wrecks. This is far from the
truth. In its 533 pages he also covers the history of the island,
the Japanese occupation and the subsequent US air campaign against
the Japanese.
The book is split into two halves. The first describes the
occupation and the air campaign. This is illustrated with detailed
maps and photographs from the time. The second half is dedicated to
describing the 57 wrecks: 52 ships and 5 aircraft.
Each wreck has an introductory history of the ship. This is followed
by detailed information about the wreck as it appears today on the
sea floor. This section is illustrated with detailed historical
maps, drawings of the wrecks and beautiful colour underwater
photographs.
As a boy I was inspired to go to Truk Lagoon by the 1969 Jacques
Cousteau trip, and subsequent film documentary The Lagoon of Lost
Ships. In fact, this was one of the reasons I took up diving. I
still haven't got there, but after reading Mr Bailey's excellent
book I shall be be booking my trip very shortly. Thank you to Dan E
Bailey for sharing what must be a lifetime's work.
